12 Ply Yarn FAQ
Is 12 ply the same as chunky or bulky yarn?
Yes, they're different names for the same weight, chunky and bulky are just the common terms for 12 ply (it's the #5 weight in the US system).
What's the difference between the two 100% wool options?
Merino Magic Chunky is Heirloom's merino line, softer against the skin and the one to reach for on wearables. Easy Care 12-Ply is a firmer, straight wool better suited to projects that'll take more everyday handling, like throws or homewares. Neither listing confirms machine-washable/superwash treatment, so check the ball band before you wash either one.
Which yarn goes furthest for a blanket?
Yardage per gram varies more than you'd expect at this weight. Patons Aria is spun light and lofty at 170m per 100g, so it stretches further than most of the range. Premier Rustic and Patons Sierra Chunky both run close to 1m per gram too. Panda Magnum and Everyday Acrylic Super Chunky are denser yarns, so budget for more balls if you're using either for a full-size blanket.
What's the difference between the acrylic-wool blends?
Sierra Chunky is mostly acrylic with 20% wool, a solid all-rounder for jumpers, blankets, and beanies. Aria flips that ratio to 80% acrylic and knits up with a dappled, lofty look, better if you want an airy fabric rather than a dense, warm one.
What's the Imperial Velvet yarn actually like to work with?
Imperial Velvet is 100% polyester with a plush, chenille-style texture, not a standard wool or acrylic chunky. It's good for blankets, scarves, and jumpers where you want that soft, velvety feel, but chenille-style yarns split more easily on sharp-tipped hooks and needles, a blunt-tipped hook or a smooth needle will give you an easier time with it than a pointed one.
What needles or hooks do I need for 12 ply?
As a general range, 5.5mm to 8mm knitting needles or a 6.5mm to 9mm crochet hook, though always check the specific ball band since it varies by yarn. At this size, metal needles get heavy fast over a big project, interchangeable sets like KnitPro Bamboo Chunky or KnitPro Symfonie Chunky are both much lighter in hand, bamboo has a plain natural finish, Symfonie is coloured laminated birch if you'd rather the needles look as good as the project.
