I've experimented with a variety of hooks in an attempt to overcome this problem. The Addi Swing Ergonomic Crochet Hook has been a game changer. I can make complete items of clothing without difficulty and mostly without pain. I know it's a cliche but it really has been a gamechanger for me. I'm so grateful to find them I am a disability pensioner so I am buying one each pay until I have the complete set. They are that good!

I love this hook, it does make working with stiffer yarns so much easier and has increase my pace working with the softer yarn.

I am in love with the Addi Swing Ergonomic Crochet Hooks! My most recent addition to my collection is the 2mm size! It fits in my hand beautifully, is utterly comfortable to use and produces perfect, uniform stitches. I have nerve issues in my hands so have tried many crochet hooks purporting to be ergonomic, but the Addi Swing Ergonomic Crochet Hook truly is. I can crochet with this hook without creating pressure palsy in my hand or fingers, which is vital for me when I crochet. Depending on how you were taught to hold your crochet hook, this hook design is easy to adjust to and works a treat! I heartily recommend it!
