ChiaoGoo FAQ
Twist or Spin, which interchangeable system should I get?
It comes down to material and feel. Twist tips are stainless steel, fast and light, and suit slippery yarns like silk or bamboo blends since the smooth metal lets stitches glide. Spin tips are honed bamboo, warmer in the hand and grippier, better if you find metal tips too slick or you're working with a fibre that's already slippery, like alpaca or superwash merino. Both are available as individual tips or complete sets.
What about Quads, how is that different from Twist?
Quads Square tips are a genuinely different shape, square rather than round. The four flat sides give some knitters a different, often more relaxed grip, and can help with hand fatigue over long sessions. If you already knit comfortably on round needles, there's no real need to switch, this is for people who've found round tips uncomfortable, not an upgrade over Twist.
Which interchangeable set size do I actually need, mini, small, large, or complete?
This is about how many needle sizes and cable lengths you get, not quality, every set is made to the same standard. Mini and small sets cover the most commonly used needle sizes with one or two cable lengths, enough if you mostly knit one type of project, like jumpers or socks. Large and complete sets add finer and larger needle sizes plus more cable lengths, worth it if you knit a wide range of projects or want to avoid buying tips one at a time later.
Fixed Red Lace or fixed Bamboo circulars, which should I buy?
Red Lace needles are stainless steel with a sharp, lace-style point, ideal for lace knitting, socks, and anything where you need to manipulate small stitches precisely. Bamboo Circular needles are warmer, lighter, and grippier, better for slippery yarn or for knitters who find metal tips fatiguing. If you're not sure, Red Lace is the safer default for general use since the tip works for lace and standard knitting alike, Bamboo is the one to reach for on slippery fibres specifically.
What tip length should I choose, 3", 4", or 5"?
Longer tips, 5", give you more surface to hold onto and suit larger needle sizes or bigger hands. Shorter tips, 3", are better for small-circumference projects like socks or sleeves and for anyone who prefers a lighter, more compact needle in hand. 4" is the middle ground and the most commonly bought length for general project work.
Do I need SWIV360 swivel cables, or are standard cables fine?
Standard cables work for most knitting. SWIV360 cables rotate independently at the join, which stops the cable twisting and kinking during use. That matters if you knit Magic Loop or do a lot of colourwork where the cable gets twisted from constantly turning the work. If you mostly knit straightforward projects in one direction, you won't notice much difference.
Is the ChiaoGoo bamboo crochet hook worth it if I mainly knit?
If you only crochet occasionally, to finish edges or seams on a knitted piece, the Premium Bamboo Crochet Hook is a good match, comfortable to hold and consistent with the bamboo warmth of ChiaoGoo's other tools. If crochet is your main craft, it's worth comparing against our full crochet hook range, since ChiaoGoo's crochet offering here is smaller and less size-specific than brands built primarily around crochet.
